The Haryana government has given the green light to an ambitious ₹750-crore elevated corridor that will seamlessly link the Dwarka Expressway with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, significantly enhancing connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters. This state-of-the-art infrastructure project is expected to be completed within two years, providing a signal-free corridor for thousands of daily travelers.

The elevated corridor will begin at Vatika Chowk and extend to the CPR cloverleaf, effectively bypassing traffic congestion along the existing Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). This project, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), was formally approved during a high-level board meeting chaired by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh.

According to official plans, the elevated roadway will feature six lanes, divided into three lanes on each side, along with dedicated service roads. The existing SPR stretch will be repurposed into service lanes, complete with designated entry and exit points to ensure smooth traffic movement. Additionally, green belts and cycle lanes measuring 2.5 to 3 meters wide will be developed on both sides to promote eco-friendly commuting options.

₹750-Crore Elevated Road Approved To Enhance Connectivity Between Major Expressways

The GMDA board, responsible for overseeing infrastructure developments in Gurugram, has given final approval to this crucial project. The ₹750-crore budget includes ₹130 crore allocated for land acquisition near Vatika Chowk, ensuring that necessary expansions can be carried out without delay.

Once the tendering process is completed and construction is awarded, the project is expected to be executed within a two-year timeframe. Officials have confirmed that the new infrastructure will significantly reduce congestion on Sohna Road and Golf Course Road, providing an efficient alternative route for commuters traveling between Delhi, Gurugram, and beyond.

Currently, the stretch between Vatika Chowk and the CPR cloverleaf features three signalized junctions, which contribute to frequent bottlenecks and increased travel time. The construction of a signal-free elevated corridor aims to eliminate these disruptions, ensuring faster and smoother traffic flow between Dwarka Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, and National Highway 8 (NH-8).

GMDA officials have already begun the process of hiring consultants who will draft the technical design specifications and the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Once completed, the elevated roadway will offer a long-term traffic decongestion solution for one of Gurugram’s busiest corridors.

A Direct, Hassle-Free Route From Rajiv Chowk to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

Currently, commuters traveling from Dwarka Expressway or Jaipur towards Sohna and Faridabad have to navigate through Rajiv Chowk or Subhash Chowk to access the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, resulting in longer travel times and increased congestion.

The elevated corridor will act as a strategic bypass, offering a direct connection from Vatika Chowk to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway via the CPR cloverleaf. This upgrade will not only improve traffic efficiency but also support the growing demand for seamless intra-city and inter-state connectivity.

Originally proposed in March 2019, the redevelopment of SPR has been a long-awaited project aimed at revitalizing a crucial urban corridor that has suffered from poor infrastructure and heavy traffic congestion. The project received administrative approval in June 2022, paving the way for major infrastructural enhancements.

The initial ₹845.5 crore redevelopment plan included:

  • Upgrading the entire 14-km stretch from Ghata T-point to NH-8
  • Construction of eight flyovers
  • Expansion of existing roads into six-lane carriageways
  • Development of service roads to improve local traffic movement

However, during the planning phase, officials reassessed the necessity of constructing three separate flyovers between Vatika Chowk and the CPR cloverleaf, as traffic volume along this stretch was not high enough to justify multiple flyover constructions. Instead, it was proposed that raising this section of SPR into an elevated corridor would be a more effective solution, ensuring a seamless journey from Delhi’s Shiv Murti to NH-8 and ultimately to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

GMDA Greenlights Additional Urban Development Projects

Apart from approving the elevated road project, the GMDA board has also sanctioned several key infrastructure and urban development projects aimed at enhancing Gurugram’s overall livability. These include:

1. Upgrading Tau Devi Lal Stadium Into a Multi-Sport & Entertainment Hub

As part of efforts to promote sports and recreational activities, the GMDA has approved the transformation of Tau Devi Lal Stadium into a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment center. The upgraded facility will include:

  • A shooting range
  • A hockey field
  • Courts for volleyball, basketball, and golf
  • A multi-purpose hall for various sporting events
  • An athletics track with a professional football ground
