Two additional Metro lines have been approved for Gurugram, marking a significant expansion of the city’s public transportation network. The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has given the green light to these projects, which will connect Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 5 and Bhondsi to the Gurgaon Railway Station. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity, ease congestion, and integrate key residential and commercial hubs into the Metro network.

Approval and Strategic Importance

The decision to expand Gurugram’s Metro network was taken during HMRTC’s 57th board meeting, held in Chandigarh and chaired by Chief Secretary TVSN Prasad. Officials familiar with the matter confirmed that this approval represents a major boost to the city’s urban transport infrastructure. The Metro extensions will provide residents with improved access to key commercial and transit hubs, reducing dependency on private vehicles and fostering sustainable urban mobility.

A senior official from HMRTC, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that consultants will soon be hired to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for both routes. These reports will include feasibility studies, cost assessments, and projected timelines, ensuring a well-structured implementation plan.

Bhondsi to Gurugram Railway Station: Expanding Reach

The first proposed Metro line will stretch approximately 17 kilometers, beginning at Bhondsi village and ending at the Gurugram Railway Station. This corridor will significantly improve accessibility for residents in the southern parts of Gurugram, who currently rely on road transport. The route will pass through key locations such as Vatika Chowk, Subash Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Sadar Bazar, and the Gurugram bus terminal, making it a crucial link for daily commuters.

This line is expected to ease congestion along Sohna Road and National Highway 48, providing an alternative mode of transportation for thousands of travelers. Additionally, it will integrate with the proposed Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) at Rajiv Chowk, enhancing regional connectivity.

Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 5: Strengthening Core Connectivity

The second Metro corridor, spanning 13 kilometers, will connect Golf Course Extension Road to Sector 5, covering major commercial and residential zones. This route will follow Sheetla Mata Road and include key stops at Atul Kataria Chowk, Signature Tower crossing, Rana Pratap Chowk, and the Millennium City Centre Metro station.

By linking to the existing Metro network at Millennium City Centre, this line will improve last-mile connectivity for thousands of commuters traveling between Gurugram’s rapidly developing sectors. Additionally, this corridor will serve as a feeder line to the broader Metro expansion plan, enabling seamless travel across different parts of the city.

Gurugram’s Metro Expansion Vision

Yash Sachdeva, Mobility Consultant for the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), stated that these new Metro routes are part of a long-term vision to establish an extensive Metro network across the city by 2031. The aim is to connect densely populated areas with key business districts, ensuring that residents and professionals have reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation options.

The integration of these Metro lines with the ongoing 28.5-kilometer Millennium City Centre to Cyber Hub Metro extension is a crucial step toward building a comprehensive transit system. Last year, the Haryana government established the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) as a special-purpose entity to oversee these expansions. Once completed, these projects will not only enhance urban mobility but also contribute to Gurugram’s transformation into a model smart city with world-class public transportation infrastructure.
